VELL J.A.G. 2021
Junior Athletic Games
"J.A.G."
Established in 1995, these games were the innovation of Leesburg Police Department’s school resource officers. The concept behind J.A.G. was to allow students to compete in a supervised environment where fun and good sportsmanship is emphasized. The event facilitates positive interaction between Leesburg Police Officers and the children in our community.
Events include the Long Jump, Soccer Kick, Softball Throw, Football Throw, 50 Yard Dash, 100 Yard Dash, the ½ Mile Run and the 400 Yard School Spirit Relay. Each student receives a t-shirt and a certificate of participation. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners receive a medal in their events as well as the top 3 finishers in the School Spirit Relay. A trophy is awarded to the school with the highest number of points based on medals in the events.
There are more than 350 students that participate from our local schools - Beverly Shores Elementary, Leesburg Elementary, Fruitland Park Elementary, Treadway Elementary, Rimes Early Learning Center and The Villages Elementary. All students are given the opportunity to tryout for the events during their PE classes. Students are selected to participate in the JAG games by the PE coaches based on their athletic ability, grades, and behavior.

Who goes to JAG and how are they chosen?
Here at VELL we are committed to taking as many students to JAG as possible and to that extent we have all students in grades 1-5 try each event during PE class. After the new year we begin training for the JAG game events. The students who perform the best in each event are considered. The names of those students are shared among their teachers and administration, feedback is collected and a combination of the students performance in the event as well as in the classroom as well as those who we believe will best represent our school are invited to join our JAG team. There are only a few spots per event in each grade so we only take 2-3 students per event in each grade. If a student cannot make it, we ask the next student on our list. Some students go as an alternate only and may not end up participating in an event that day, but they will get a t-shirt and are expected to cheer their teammates on and represent VELL to the best of their ability. We know it is difficult to only sit and cheer on your team mates, but we have had alternates in the past participate because someone did not show up and they received medals for coming in 1st, 2nd or 3rd!
